Required Documents
While the specific documents may vary depending on the applicant’s circumstances,
the following are generally required:
Documents Related to the Applicant (Family Member)
• Application for Certificate of Eligibility (COE) (for cases where the family member is invited from overseas) or Application for Change of Status of Residence (for cases where the status is changed within Japan)
• Photograph (4cm × 3cm, taken within the last 3 months, with the applicant’s name written on the back)
• Copy of Passport
• Residence Card (if the applicant is already residing in Japan)
Documents to Be Prepared by the Sponsor (Foreign National Residing in Japan)
• Residence Card and Passport of the Sponsor (For presentation only)
• Documents Proving the Sponsor’s Occupation and Income
Submit any one of the following:
- Certificate of Employment (issued by the employer)
- Resident Tax Certificate and Tax Payment Certificate (for the past one year)
- Bank Balance Certificate in the Sponsor’s Name (if necessary)
Documents Proving Family Relationship (If written in a foreign language, a Japanese translation must be attached)
• Family Register (Koseki Tohon) (If the marriage procedures were completed in Japan)
• Marriage Certificate Official document proving the marital relationship
• Birth Certificate (Required when applying to bring children to Japan)
Other Documents (If Required)
• Residence Certificate (Juminhyo) of the Family Member (If the family member is already residing in Japan)
What You Can Do with a Dependent Visa
✅ You can reside in Japan and live together with your spouse or children
✅ By obtaining Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted, you are allowed to work up to 28 hours per week (such as part-time jobs)
✅ The period of stay is granted as 1 year, 3 years, or 5 years, and is renewable
⚠ Full-time employment is not permitted under a Dependent Visa!
➡ If you wish to work more than 28 hours per week, you must apply for a Change of Status of Residence to a work visa.
